Barbie 28 inch Best Fashion Friend Classic Dress

I realize this is Thanksgiving week and there are a lot of grandmas out there who need some 28″ Barbie clothing in a hurry, so I’m sharing this pattern for you, in its unfinished state. I’m planning to do more work on it later.

Here is a dress I made from this draft back in 2018. I think I used the skirt that comes with the strapless bodice. I didn’t mark how long I cut the sleeve.

Here’s the file. <– THIS IS THE DOWNLOAD LINK

Instructions

(Mar 2021) Okay, I made up a test from the current version of the pdf. This is with the long sleeves and using the skirt from the strapless dress pattern. The skirt from the strapless dress sets in to this bodice exactly, so for the black and plaid version I must have cut it a fair bit wider in order to gather.

1/4″ seam allowances are included.

I cut on the line for “optional lower neckline” and added a neck facing.

Stitch the facing with 1/4′, clip, turn, and topstitch.

Notice that 1/4″ is narrower than the presser foot. I have a black line drawn on mine to remind me. Stitch up darts by lining them up and then get a good eyeball of where the line will end. Try to stitch straight ๐Ÿ™‚

Gather top of sleeve cap and attach the sleeve, then stitch up the side seams. Then attach the skirt. I gathered it and then had to ungather, because there just wasn’t enough fabric. Definitely going to add more width to the skirt on the next test version.

And here is one of the beautiful photos shared by Marisa Goodwin on a comment on the Feedback page. I mislaid that attachments but found it again. This is really the best place for it, I think. Thank you so much, Marisa!

  1. I’m trying to print the black skirt with red plaid top and there’s no place to get that pattern. It prints everything but that! Is that a free pattern?

    1. Click where it says “Here’s the file”
And also, when I went to double check that the correct file would open, I discovered I had reversed the file names between this one and the peasant pattern. Hopefully it works now.

  2. Thank you so much. I have your original strapless bodice and skirt pattern. I happened to see a Pinterest picture and it linked back to this page.

    1. Cool. I’m going to redo the original 11″ Barbie strapless pretty soon here, and repost on this new site. Thanks for the comment and Pinterest traffic ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. This is a great pattern! I just made a real quick short sleeved version for my daughter’s 28″ Barbie and I love it to pieces. I’m excited to make Barbie a few more garments using variations of your patterns, there’s not much out there in the way of dressing the 28″ Barbie, so these are deeply appreciated!

  3. Hi I’m trying to print the pattern for the red plaid shirt and black skirt. I just purchased a 28 inch best friend Barbie doll from my granddaughter and I need clothes for the poor thing! LOL

        1. There aren’t any instructions yet. It’s just the pattern. I’ll be doing more work on this eventually. Thanks for your comment. Comments usually help spur me to get things done ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Hi Janel,
I found your 28โ€ doll patterns on Pinterest. I am so excited. I love making doll clothes. I bought a 28โ€ doll for my grandniece for Christmas. I made my own patterns and made her a couple of extra outfits. Her birthday is this month. I had to get my sister to send the dollโ€™s measurements to me so I could make her this red outfit with the hat. I am excited to make her some more outfits with your patterns. Thanks so much for sharing!

  5. Hi Janel,
I made a few dresses using your 28โ€ Barbie classic dress pattern & the strapless dress pattern but added ribbons for straps. I designed my own pencil skirt & was pleased with the result. I donโ€™t have a platform for sharing it but would be happy to give it to you if youโ€™d like it.
